The History Of Coffee

Legend tells of Kaldi, a goatherd tending his flock in the hills of Ethiopia, accidentally discovering an interesting occurrence when his goats became lively and unable to sleep at night after ingesting the berries from the trees around their grazing area.

Knowing that his duty was to report his finding, Kaldi took some of the coffee beans and told of his observation to an abbot at the local monastery.

Itrigued by Kaldi’s story, the abbot made a drink with the berries, and after drinking what we call coffee today, found himself wide awake and alert during the long evening prayer. Fascinated by the energizing effects of this newly found drink, the abbot keenly shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery.

Before long word of this interesting drink and its abilities had spread to the east and eventually reached the Arabian peninsula. Little did anyone know that coffee had begun a journey that would span the globe.  While coffee beans are now grown in many different countries worldwide, the Arabs were the first to not only grown the beans, but to cultivate and trade them.

By the sixteenth century coffee was being cultivated in Persia, Turkey, Syria and Egypt. It is thought that Muslims used coffee as a suitable substitute for alcohol (forbidden by the Koran) to benefit from its energizing effect. Coffee became so popular that it was not only drunk in homes, but in the many Coffee Houses that soon began to appear in cities.

These Houses were heavily frequented by people seeking both the coffee drink but also the relaxing, enjoyable social interaction they provided. Good conversation, pleasant music and the smooth flavorful taste of coffee were considered an enjoyable combination, over a game of chess.

By the seventeenth century, the popularity of coffee had spread into Europe, and quickly made its way across the continent. Some considered it to be ‘the bitter invention of Satan’ and in 1615 local clergy in Venice condemned it. Controversy grew to the point that Pope Clement VIII decided to taste coffee himself.  Much to the clergy’s annoyance, the Pope found the taste of coffee enjoyable and gave it his approval.

Coffee Houses began springing up in France, Germany, Holland, Austria and England, and much like the Arabs, Europeans discovered the social aspects of enjoying a cup of coffee with friends. By the middle of the seventeenth century, over 300 Coffee Houses were in existence in London alone, and coffee could be purchased for as little as a penny.

America finally got to savor the flavor of a great cup of coffee in the mid-1600′s when coffee made its way to New Amsterdam (later to be known as New York), but it wasn’t until 1773 when King George imposed a heavy tax on tea that Americans would make coffee there drink of preference. By the end of the 18th century, coffee had become one of the most profitable export crops in the World, reaching all four corners of the globe.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in North America and has quite a long history. The hot drink was first introduced to this country in 1668, and shortly after New York became the site of one of the first coffee houses in the United States.

The well known Wall Street was actually the site of many early coffee houses where the New York Stock Exchange and The Bank of New York both started. Coffee has evolved into more than just a beverage, it has shaped an entire cultural environment.

The world has become inundated with corporate chains like Starbucks that have dominated their tiny coffee bar predecessors. Each day coffee drinker’s flock for a cup of their favorite flavor, not just to drink, but to socialize among people as well. At a coffee shop, people can spend hours drinking, reading, or enjoying the company of others.

It is an excellent place for lonely people to gather in a comfortable setting and interact with others. Other times, coffee bars offer customers a relaxing atmosphere where it is quiet and a person can be alone with their own thoughts. A person can sit and watch people without having to say a word.

Coffee culture in the United States has come to describe a range of coffee shops like tiny espresso stands to large chain stores. Many contemporary coffee bars offer Wi-Fi services to their customers for convenience as well as wide ranges of beverages like cappuccinos and lattes.

It draws in the yuppie business crowd. On the other hand, there are diner-like restaurants that specialize in coffee and cater to the senior crowd that prefer just regular drip coffee. Many older people gather around counters with bar stools, drink coffee, read the newspaper, and discuss different events.

The United States is a very large buyer of coffee beans. The coffee market is extremely popular and continues to grow which extends to the livelihoods of coffee bars.
